What is the Unix epoch?
The Unix epoch (also called Unix time, POSIX time or a Unix timestamp) is the number of seconds that have passed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, not counting leap seconds. Many systems store it as a signed 32-bit integer, which overflows on January 19, 2038 — the Year 2038 problem. This converter reads timestamps in seconds (10 digits), milliseconds (13 digits), microseconds (16 digits) and nanoseconds (19 digits).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Epoch Time Converter?
It is a free browser tool that converts Unix epoch timestamps to human-readable dates and dates back to timestamps. It also shows the epoch start and end of any year, month or day, and converts seconds into years, months, days, hours and minutes.
What is Unix epoch time?
Unix epoch time is the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, not counting leap seconds. It is also called Unix time, POSIX time or a Unix timestamp.
Does it support milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds?
Yes. The unit is detected from the size of the number: 10 digits are read as seconds, 13 as milliseconds, 16 as microseconds and 19 as nanoseconds. The assumed unit is shown with every result.
How do I convert a date to a Unix timestamp?
Enter the year, month, day, hour, minute and second, choose a time zone and click Date to timestamp. You can also type a date string such as 2026-09-27T13:07:01Z, an RFC 2822 date, or a relative phrase like "+2 days" or "3 hours ago".
Which time zone are the results shown in?
Every result is shown in GMT/UTC and in your browser’s local time zone. The date-to-timestamp and start/end tools also let you pick UTC, local time or a common world time zone, with daylight saving time handled automatically.
How are months and years counted in the seconds converter?
Days, hours, minutes and seconds are exact. Months and years use the average Gregorian length (30.44 days and 365.2425 days), which is the usual convention for turning a duration into calendar units.
What is the Year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer can only count up to 2,147,483,647 seconds, which is reached on January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. After that the value overflows. Using 64-bit integers avoids the problem.
How do I get the current epoch time in code?
JavaScript: Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000). Python: int(time.time()). PHP: time(). Java: Instant.now().getEpochSecond(). Linux shell: date +%s. SQL (MySQL): SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP().
Is Epoch Time Converter free to use?
Yes. All Neemtools utilities are free to use with no signup required.
Is my data uploaded when I use Epoch Time Converter?
For most tools, processing happens in your browser and your input is not stored on our servers. A few tools may fetch live URLs when that feature requires external data — each tool page explains what applies.
Do I need an account to use Epoch Time Converter?
No account is required. Open the tool and start using it immediately.
